October 13, 2011 — World-renowned computer scientist Dennis Ritchie, who co-created the C programming language and co-wrote the Unix operating system, died last week in New Jersey after a long illness, according to Web reports. He was 70.

I met Dennis Ritchie once at a USENIX. I was with Neil Groundwater when Neil looks over my shoulder and yells, "hey Dennis, come over here, I have someone I want you to meet." When I turned around to shake Dennis Ritchie's hand I think I had to pull my jaw up off the floor. A very nice and brilliant man. Very sad...
