This is a very well written article on MAN - Modern Application News titled:
Below is the opening introduction:
"Mathematician and 19th century inventor William Thomson's timeless advice made sense in the 19th century, but applies just as well today to the North American manufacturing industry: "If you cannot measure it, you cannot manage it." Yet according to Dave Edstrom, past Chairman of the MTConnect Institute, approximately 95% of manufacturing machines are not monitored. By monitoring all types of machine tools and associated processes, shops can improve communications to increase production and profit."

The article goes on to discuss The Last Meter:

"MERLIN is a hardware and software solution that solves that "last meter" of connection that manufacturing companies need. It monitors machines across the facility and analyzes where the bottlenecks are happening and where the company can make improvements. MERLIN also provides real-time dashboards of plant operations performance indicators for all to see."

We had a great vacation with my lovely bride of almost 31 years, Michael, Tim and we picked up John.  John's fiancee Janet joined us in Lake Tahoe as did Janet's brother Jeff.

Spending The Afternoon With Dick Morley - Priceless


In 2000, Dick Morley and I gave talks at AMT's Annual Meeting in Puerto Rico.  I was speaking on the Internet and Dick was giving one of his incredible talks on manufacturing. Dick and I had lunch in Puerto Rico and we discussed open source and manufacturing.  When I got back to the DC area, I sent Dick a copy of Eric Raymond's book, The Cathedral and the Bazaar.

Fast Forward 14 years.  Dick is now a Director at Memex Automation. When I asked how we were asking Dick to help Memex Automation, outside of the duties of being a Director, we were not working with Dick as closely as I would have thought.  I told Dave McPhail, our CEO, that I would like to reach out to Dick.  Thomas Smeenk, our VP of BD at Memex Automation, reached out to Dick.  Dick was very generous and said he would enjoy it if I made the trip up to New Hampshire to visit him.

I flew up to see Dick this past Tuesday the 19th.  We discussed mostly physics - which was fascinating for me.  We then went into a variety of topics and then discussed Memex Automation and where we should take the technology.

Below is Dick in The Barn after we got back from lunch.  I gave him a copy of my book (on the table) MTConnect: To Measure Is To Know, since MTConnect is very important to Memex Automation and manufacturing.  It was a GREAT day and I am extremely glad that Dick wants to work closely with me and Memex Automation!

BURLINGTON, ONTARIO--(Aug. 11, 2014) - Astrix Networks Inc., operating as Memex Automation ("Astrix" or the "Company") (TSX VENTURE:OEE), announces it has closed the second and final tranche of a private placement. Oversubscribed, the total gross proceeds raised was $2,000,000, including the proceeds of the second tranche of $1,172,498. A total of 16,666,664 Units were issued at a price of $0.12 each ("Units"), including the second tranche placement of 9,770,814 units Each Unit is comprised of one common share in the capital of the Company (a "Common Share") and one-half of one common share purchase warrant (a "Warrant"). Each whole Warrant entitles the holder to purchase one Common Share at a price of $0.16 at any time prior to 4:00 p.m. (Eastern time) on August 9, 2016.

In connection with the private placement the Company paid a finder's fee on certain subscriptions of 8% of the gross proceeds raised and broker warrants (the "Broker Warrants") equal to 8% of the number of Units sold. The total fees paid were $116,880 in cash and 974,004 Broker Warrants. Each Broker Warrant entitles the holder to purchase one Common Share at a price of $0.16 at any time prior to 4:00 p.m. (Eastern time) on June 24, 2016 for those granted in the first tranche and prior to 4:00 p.m. on August 9, 2016 for those granted in the second tranche of the private placement.
All securities issued are subject to a hold period, which will expire on October 24, 2014 for those issued in the first tranche and December 9, 2014 for those issued in the second tranche of the private placement. The closing is subject to receipt of final approval from the TSX Venture Exchange.

13,926 out of 13,950 Peer Reviewed Articles Support Climate Change


There is a great article at Slate by Phil Plait called:

The Very, Very Thin Wedge of Denial

that quantifies global climate change peer-reviewed literature.  Below are a couple of paragraphs the references a National Science Board member's analysis:

"In 2012, National Science Board member James Lawrence Powell investigated peer-reviewed literature published about climate change and found that out of 13,950 articles, 13,926 supported the reality of global warming. Despite a lot of sound and fury from the denial machine, deniers have not really been able to come up with a coherent argument against a consensus. The same is true for a somewhat different study that showed a 97 percent consensus among climate scientists supporting both the reality of global warming and the fact that human emissions are behind it.
Powell recently finished another such investigation, this time looking at peer-reviewed articles published between November 2012 and December 2013. Out of 2,258 articles (with 9,136 authors), how many do you think explicitly rejected human-driven global warming? Go on, guess!"

The article by Phil Plait ends with a wake up message for all of us, but especially the Republican anti-science crowd and the talking heads on Fox News:

"The basic science of global warming is independent of party line. It doesn’t care if you’re left, right, black, white, straight, gay, pro-gun, pro-abortion rights, pro-GMO, or pro-vaccine. It’s real, and it affects all of us. Mission No. 1 is to get people to understand this, and then to get them to elect politicians who do as well."

Our friends at Automation.com picked up the Mazak uses MERLIN MES and MTConnect at Kentucky plant success story.

This is a fantastic example of how our technology at Memex Automation is transforming manufacturing.

I remember watching this live with my mother and my sister as my father was on military travel at the time. It was 9:56pm today 45 years ago in Trenton, Illinois where we watched on our 25" TV.  Below is from NASA:


Below is a fun fact I did not know on the landing:

 • Despite millions of dollars of technology invested in the programme, a good old Biro ball-point pen came to the crew’s rescue. Upon return to the lunar module to return Aldrin broke the ignition switch. Without this they couldn’t activate the ascent engines and could have been stuck on the moon. But, industrious Buzz had the ingenious idea to jam a pen into the switch and miraculously it worked.

Dr. Harry Foxwell's Ride for Johns Hopkins Kimmel Center to Conquer Cancer



Long time friend, former Sun Microsystems colleague and just one hell of a good guy is doing a very important bicycle ride to benefit Johns Hopkins Kimmel Center.

As Harry states why he is riding, "Diagnosed with Prostate Cancer last Fall, likely resulting from Agent Orange exposure during my tour in Vietnam; prostate cryosurgery in January; and healthy now!  Certainly healthy enough to ride for others and support the Ride to Conquer Cancer.  Mother-in-law is a breast cancer survivor, father-in-law (now deceased) had Leukemia.  Get old enough and someone in your family will probably be diagnosed with some form of cancer.  Lots of research is needed to beat the many forms this disease can take.  Support that research in any way you can"




Please support Harry on this tough ride (75 miles Saturday and 75 miles on a Sunday through some tough hills in Maryland).

Both Harry and my father got cancer from agent orange in Vietnam.  I donated and so should you!

MTInsight Goodbye - Thanks AMT!



Below is MTInsight Group that I had the privilege of working with at AMT - The Association For Manufacturing the past 4 1/2 years.   Everyone was able to be there for the photo except for Steve Fanning, President and CEO of Path To Progress.  Yesterday was my last day at AMT and I received this photo, with everyone's signatures, in a very expensive frame.

For the last four years, I have had the privilege of writing articles for the IMTS Insider. It has been something that I always looked forward to each month and greatly enjoyed. As IMTS Insider readers know, articles come out once per month except as we get close to IMTS, then IMTS Insider is sent twice per month. What made my life exponentially easier was working with the great folks at AMT – The Association For Manufacturing Technology’s Communication Department. I would like to sincerely thank Bonnie Gurney for all of your tremendous support and great suggestions over the years. If I could offer only one last piece of advice for any exhibitor at IMTS 2014, it would be to become an MTInsight subscriber and then go buy the IMTS 2014 app. In my personal opinion, it will be the best investment that you will spend this year for any trade show that you attend! The great news is that you do not have to be an exhibitor to benefit from MTInsight; AMT members can also benefit from the many apps that are available beyond just the IMTS 2014 app. Also remember, these apps run entirely in your browser, so you never have to worry about local updates as they take care of that for you behind the scenes – just go to MTInsight.org, login and go! I had the great privilege of working with the MTInsight team the past four years and I am going to greatly miss all the fantastic people who make up the team. We created a fantastic platform, with great apps and we had fun while doing it. You can’t ask for more than that in life.

I also must thank Peter Eelman and Doug Woods. I would not be at AMT if not for Peter and Doug. Peter mentioned to Doug that I was leaving Sun Microsystems to take a year off. I met with Doug for lunch in early 2010 and he convinced me to push off my sabbatical and to come consult at AMT. That was one of the best decisions that I have ever made.

I came on board after creating my own company, Virtual Photons Electrons, to help AMT out with what would later become MTInsight, MTConnect and future technologies. I was President and Chairman of the Board of the MTConnect Institute from May 2010 to the end of 2013, created the [MC]2 MTConnect: Connecting Manufacturing Conference, wrote a book, MTConnect: To Measure Is To Know, that I gave away to [MC]2 2013 attendees and worked with a lot of great companies and individuals over the years to evangelize and grow the MTConnect community. As you can see from my list of articles, I wrote a number of articles on MTConnect over the years.

Peter and Bonnie gave me this opportunity to be able to write for the IMTS Insider and I am forever grateful. I have known Peter since 1997. We were next-door neighbors for over fifteen years and became great friends. Peter, thank you for all of your support and friendship over the many years!

Manufacturing Wealth - Net Neutrality

WHY YOU SHOULD CARE AS AN INDIVIDUAL AND AS A BUSINESS OWNER

Besides President Johnson’s “The Great Society” and President Kennedy’s Apollo program, what stands out as the program that truly helped all Americans? I would argue that the Internet and the Eisenhower Interstate Highway System would be #1 and #2. While the government has managed not to mess up our highway system, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) might be doing significant damage to the Internet, depending on what they decide to do with net neutrality. Anyone who tells you net neutrality is not a big deal is demonstrating their complete lack of knowledge of economics and technology. Let’s dig into net neutrality and learn why it is important for not only manufacturing, but for every industry and any person who uses the Internet.
Let’s start with the basics; what is net neutrality? Before we even get into net neutrality, it is important to have a brief primer on how the Internet works. Think of life before packets, which I will explain in a few moments, as a point-to-point type of conversation that is much like what your grandmother or great grandmother would do back in the 1930s when she called her sister. Your grandmother would call the local operator, who was sitting in front of a big switchboard, and tell the operator she wanted to talk to her sister. The operator would physically connect her jack to her sister’s jack using a cord. They had a point-to-point connection. You can imagine how inefficient that would be in terms of scaling. It was once calculated that if every person in the United States had a phone, then every person in the United States would also have to be a phone operator because of the number of possible connections. Clearly, that did not scale. Along came mechanical switchboards and the ability to dial your own phone without having to use an operator. This was a big step for communication. Computers could speak to each other over phone lines, but there was an impending security problem with this scenario.
In the late 1950s, it was obvious to those in the military and in the computer industry that computers were going to be very important for our national security. I was born in the Eisenhower administration and remember the drills of getting under the desk in case of a nuclear attack. Luckily for the United States, we had very smart scientists both in government and in industry. While the Internet had many fathers, I am going to highlight just one who did seminal work on packet switching, which is fundamental for our discussion on net neutrality. The best article I could find on this topic is from Wired Magazine, published September 4th, 2012 and is titled, “Paul Baran, the link between nuclear war and the internet.” Cade Metz states in the opening paragraphs:
“Paul Baran set out to build a means of communication that could survive a nuclear war. And he ended up inventing the fundamental networking techniques that underpin the Internet.
In the early 1960s -- as an engineer with the RAND Corporation, the US armed-forces think tank founded in the wake of the Second World War -- Baran developed a new breed of communication system that could keep running even if part of it was knocked out by a nuclear blast. It was the height of the Cold War, and the nuclear threat was very much on the mind of, well, just about everyone.
Basically, Baran cooked up a system that could divide communications into tiny pieces and use distributed network "nodes" to pass these pieces around. If one node was knocked out, the others could pick up the slack. In 1964, he published a paper on this system -- entitled "On Distributed Communications" -- and a few years later, it would play into the development of the ARPAnet, the research network that would eventually morph into the modern internet.”
This is how packets on the Internet work. Imagine you write a long email to a friend. Packet-switching divides your long email into smaller packets that are the size of a 3x5 card. Let’s say that your email is divided into 20 3x5 cards. When those 20 cards get sent out over the Internet, a few might go north, some might go south, but they all eventually reach their destination. When they reach their destination, those cards all get reassembled into the text you originally wrote. You don’t know what path each little 3x5 card took and you don’t care. All you care about is that your email gets there in one piece. There could be many, many stops along the way. The movement of Internet packets is similar to the way you take a different road to avoid traffic. At any given point in time, there are an unfathomably high number of packets moving between various systems, carrying everything from that long email to your friend, to Netflix movies, to new apps for your iPad, to encrypted communications, to Amazon.com where people are buying goods, and everything in between.
Now, to finally answer the question, “what is net neutrality?” Net neutrality basically means that a packet is a packet with no distinction on where the packet came from, where the packet is going or the contents of the packet. Why is net neutrality a good thing? Let’s look at the Eisenhower Interstate Highway System. When President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956, the goal was to provide a highway system that was not just a hodge-podge of state roads, but a truly interconnected system. There is no one who would argue that this did not change American society and American culture in tremendous and positive ways.
If a family wants to leave from Ashburn, Va., and make a trip to visit their son in San Francisco, they can take the highway system and never have to pay a toll to get to their destination. Yes, there are toll roads, but you are not forced to take them. When you are taking the family truckster and driving across the United States, there are no signs along the way that state in big bold letters, “If you are coming from Ashburn, Va., and going to SuperDuperFun Land in San Francisco, please use the unlimited speed lane – all others are not allowed in that lane under any circumstances – even if the unlimited speed lanes are empty.”
Let’s look at a hypothetical business example of net neutrality, or rather the lack of net neutrality. Peter Eelman, VP - Exhibitions & Communications at AMT – The Association For Manufacturing Technology, and the person in charge of IMTS, gets swamped with a number of emails and phone calls from the Midwest complaining about the speed of getting data from the IMTS website. Peter investigates and finds that there are no problems with the website. Upon further investigation, Peter learns that the largest Internet Service Provider (ISP) in the Midwest, Billy Bob’s Midwest ISP, has relegated all IMTS website traffic to the slow lane. This means that all of the packets can’t take the fast lane anymore. Peter asks the president of Billy Bob’s Midwest ISP, “What can I do? My customers are complaining.” The president tells Peter, “You’re in luck; we have a special package where, for just $10,000 a month, we can put every IMTS packet onto the super-fast lane so your customers will not have to wait to get their IMTS information.” Peter then says, “So, if I do not pay you $120,000 a year, then ALL of my IMTS traffic gets slowed down, correct?” The president then says, “Peter, no, no not all. We never slow down traffic. What we have is a super-fast lane for those companies who need it and are willing to pay for it.” Peter then says, “If you put in a ‘fast lane’ then you are effectively slowing down traffic compared to how the Internet used to work, which is a packet is a packet is a packet.”
Hopefully, this brief article on net neutrality sheds some light on why this is so important for the future of the Internet, individuals and small businesses. If it is true, according to ALL of our politicians, that small business is the engine of our economy, then why are we stepping on the throats of startups by allowing some packets to be more important than other packets? Just remember, a packet should be a packet should be a packet – no matter where it came from, where it’s going and no matter what is inside of it. We should treat packets on the Internet like votes in a democracy – my vote or packet is no more or no less important than your vote or your packet. What can you do about this if you are concerned? Write a letter, don’t email, to your congressman or senator.

President Obama on Climate Change


I have voted Republican before, but with the GOP being the ASP (Anti-Science Party)  when it comes to climate change, I have lost all respect for them.

I thought this was a perfect question from Thomas Friedman and response  from President Obama when he asked "whether he ever wants to "go off" on climate change deniers in Congress:"

Below are the two paragraphs from the article:

“Yeah, absolutely,” the president said with a laugh. “Look, it’s frustrating when the science is in front of us. ... We can argue about how. But let’s not argue about what’s going on. The science is compelling. ... The baseline fact of climate change is not something we can afford to deny. And if you profess leadership in this country at this moment in our history, then you’ve got to recognize this is going to be one of the most significant long-term challenges, if not the most significant long-term challenge, that this country faces and that the planet faces. The good news is that the public may get out ahead of some of their politicians” — as people start to see the cost of cleaning up for hurricanes like Sandy or the drought in California — and when “those start multiplying, then people start thinking, ‘You know what? We’re going to reward politicians who talk to us honestly and seriously about this problem.’”

The president added: “The person who I consider to be the greatest president of all time, Abraham Lincoln, was pretty consistent in saying, ‘With public opinion there’s nothing I cannot do, and without public opinion there’s nothing I can get done,’ and so part of my job over these next two and a half years and beyond is trying to shift public opinion. And the way to shift public opinion is to really focus in on the fact that if we do nothing our kids are going to be worse off.”

The Virtuous Software Circle

The Virtuous Software Cycle

When I started working for Sun Microsystems, it quickly became apparent to me that I was going to learn a great deal about economics, in addition to Sun’s incredible array of hardware and software technology. As Sun employees, we were educated on the economics of developers, applications and customers that Sun thought leaders referred to as the “virtuous circle.” In February, I wrote about “Winning the Application Platform” and the importance of being much more than just another application, but instead being a platform that other companies want to build upon. In this article, I will discuss the virtuous circle from a software development standpoint. As software becomes increasingly important for manufacturing, the virtuous circle is something to seriously consider in your strategic software planning.

In February, I talked about how Scott McNealy discussed economics of technology by asking the question, “How expensive would it be for Wang, Data General or any of the other proprietary architecture companies to completely change their architecture?” The rhetorical question Scott asked drove home the point that changing your architecture would be an extremely expensive proposition and could put a company completely out of business. The reasons it is so expensive to completely change the architecture is that customers have applications that they have purchased and written. This virtuous cycle can be thought of as a self-reinforcing feedback loop. This is known as positive feedback. We have all seen the counter examples to the virtuous cycle called the vicious cycle. A vicious cycle might be one where losing one’s job leads to drug use, drug use leads to crime, crime leads to prison, then the person gets out of prison and can’t get a job because they have done time. This then leads to selling drugs. The person has become self-trapped in a vicious cycle.

In 2000, I was a lead for the futures track at a worldwide Sun Microsystem Conference for Systems Engineers. Sun always had a friendly rivalry with our competitor Microsoft. Scott McNealy was known for his many great quips on our friends in Seattle. For example, Scott once said, "The only thing that I'd rather own than Windows is English, because then I could charge you two hundred and forty-nine dollars for the right to speak it." It’s important when you run a conference to have one or two talks that break things up from the norm. In looking for speakers that would bring humor to the conference, I found out about Jennifer Edstrom and Marlin Eller. First, Jennifer Edstrom is no relationship to me, or at least none that either of us knew about. Jennifer and Marlin wrote a book titled, “The Barbarians Led By Bill Gates: Microsoft From The Inside: How The World's Richest Corporation Wields Its Power.” I looked at the book and it was very well written and I thought that Jennifer and Marlin might be up for a talk – especially if we purchased a number of books to give away. Their relationship to Microsoft was that Marlin was employee #72, if I remember correctly and Jennifer was the daughter of the Pam Edstrom who ran Microsoft’s PR firm. That PR firm was called Waggener Edstrom. This book caused quite an uproar and that is why I thought it would be perfect for a Sun Microsystems conference with a bunch of engineers.

In preparation for the talk, I had the good fortune to have dinner and lunch with the both of them. I asked Marlin to tell me the most impressive thing about Bill Gates. Marlin told a great story about how thorough Bill was in his thinking. The story Marlin told is the essence of the virtuous circle and drives home the point why Bill Gates is a genius.

Marlin had an idea for a new software application very early on Microsoft’s history. Marlin explained it to Bill and wrote some of his ideas on the whiteboard. At the time, Marlin was porting DOS to a new platform. Bill listened carefully and then proceeded to ask Marlin a few questions of his own. Bill asked, “If we do this Marlin, then we will have to take you off the current project that you are on.” Bill then continued, “If our goal is to become the default platform in the industry, are we better off putting you on a new project as you suggest, or should we keep moving forward to get DOS on as many platforms as possible?” Bill continued, “what path do you think will get the most number of customers for Microsoft?” Bill was able to focus on the key issue and that was winning the platform as I spoke of in the March 2014 IMTS Insider article. More importantly, Bill was able to put it in the economic terms that a young software developer could understand. Marlin knew that continuing his work on porting to a new platform was the correct choice.

What is key about winning the platform is having the software development tools that developers believe are world-class. Think of writing software as building a house. Homebuilders want the best tools available so they can quickly build great homes in order to sell lots of homes. Having the best tools is a key aspect of the virtuous circle.
Here are the key components of the virtuous software circle:
  • Customers want great applications.
  • Developers want to write great applications for a large customer base.
  • Applications are created with development tools.
Let’s take a graphical representation of the Virtuous Software Circle below.

When we look at the diagram above, it begs the obvious question, “What is the best way to increase the size of your customer base?” The obvious answer is great applications. The harder question is, “How do we get great applications?” If we are Microsoft, the first thing we want to do is own the platform. But how do you really own the platform? You build great developer tools. That is why I referenced in my February 2014 IMTS Insider article the famous 2006 video of Steve Ballmer of Microsoft jumping around the stage screaming, “developers, developers, developers.” What Mr. Ballmer was really saying was that Microsoft couldn’t continue its hold on the WINTEL (Windows and Intel) platform without taking care of developers.

The inflection point for a virtuous software circle is feeding the developers with world-class tools on a great platform. That was exactly what Microsoft was trying to do and accomplished to a very high degree. So what would you do if you were Scott McNealy at Sun Microsystems? Would you give up, or come up with a better set of developer tools. Enter Java. The employees at Sun Microsystems absolutely knew that we had to redefine the world of software development if you want to increase the size of our application and, most importantly, our customer pools. Sun created the world’s best software platform and completely revolutionized software development.

As manufacturing becomes increasingly software centric, it will become very important to think in both technical and economic terms. Think about the software virtuous circle from your company’s standpoint and ask, “Do we understand the inflection points and are we feeding the right parts of mechanism?” Who knows, maybe you can create the next Microsoft or Sun Microsystems in manufacturing?
