LA to San Francisco Memex Trip


David McPhail, President and CEO for Memex Automation and I spent a week in CA going from LA to San Francisco meeting with eight customers and prospects in a VERY successful trip.  Here are some photos along the way.  No, I am not tipping my hat to the competition on which customers we met with :-)

Sunday night I had dinner with my cousin Daniel, his wife and two kids.  They have a great family and live in an amazing location - I really appreciate that they took time out of their schedule to have dinner with me.

After David and I finished our trip, I went to Palo Alto and University Avenue to walk around before I had dinner with my son and daughter in law.  I thought, I am going to drive by the famous HP garage.  I had NO idea that it was just 4/10 of a mile from University Avenue, so I decided to take a walk.  It was VERY cool!

MTConnect Student Challenge Seeks Submissions for Ideas, Applications to Advance Digital Manufacturing
Community College and University Students Encouraged to Apply; Cash Prizes Total $33,000
 
McLean, Va. … The submission period opened today for the MTConnect Student Challenge, marking the official start of the competition for student ideas and applications utilizing MTConnect. The idea creation competition is open for submissions through September 18, 2015, while the application competition is accepting submissions through January 31, 2016.

In addition to cash prizes for winning submissions, the competition offers many benefits for participating students. It is ideal as a thesis, internship, or capstone project, and students are also provided with the opportunity to network with companies as a means to develop their professional contacts. The competition is open to enrolled college students, and those studying IT, software, mechanical, or electrical engineering are especially encouraged to apply.

MTConnect is an open source, XML- and HTTP-based communications standard that helps foster improved connectivity between manufacturing equipment and devices, allowing for data collection and monitoring. It is a key enabler for allowing manufacturers to take advantage of digital manufacturing to optimize processes and functions on the shop floor. The Student Challenge stems from a prior successful competition that solicited ideas and applications from industry professionals and the general public.

“Manufacturers in all industries are looking to leverage the opportunities offered by big data and the Industrial Internet of Things,” said Douglas K. Woods, President of the MTConnect Institute and President of AMT – The Association For Manufacturing Technology. “The MTConnect Student Challenge is an ideal competition to bring forth student-led innovation for real-world manufacturing solutions. We feel that students have the kind of creative thinking and ideas that are critical to advancing our industry, and we look forward to finding the next visionaries who can generate new approaches to digital manufacturing.”

The MTConnect Student Challenge encompasses two competitions: Idea Creation and Application Development.

MTConnect Student Challenge – Idea Creation

For the Idea Creation competition, students will be required to interview manufacturers to identify their challenges; describe potential solutions to that challenge; and create a conceptual mockup for a solution. The prizes for this competition are $5,000 for first place, $2,500 for second place, and three $1,000 prizes for runners up. The Submission period opens on June 11, 2015, and closes on September 18, 2015. Winners will be announced October 15, 2015.

MTConnect Student Challenge – Application Development

For the Application development competition, students will be required: to develop an application that demonstrates innovation and the use of manufacturing intelligence breakthroughs. The submission period is June 11, 2015, through January 31, 2016. Winners will be selected and announced on April 20, 2016, at the [MC]2 Conference in Dallas, TX.

A Great Time With Dennis Govoni and the WTRC in Munich Many, Many Years Ago


Many, many years ago Dr. Dennis Govoni and I were part of Sun Microsystems Worldwide Technical Readiness Council (WTRC) which had a small handful of the Chief Technologists on planet earth for Sun who would get together three or four times a year.  We were basically responsible for the official conduit between the field and engineering on what Sun needed for products.  It was quite the elite group and we met all over the globe.  One of the great trips was meeting at Oktoberfest.  We went out to dinner and saw this in front of a restaurant that we just had to eat at.  Dennis said something to me like, "hey dummy, get in front of this sign so I can take your picture" - which I was more than happy.  Dennis just resent this to me which caused me to laugh my a$$ off.  Thanks Dr.!

Programming a New Homelink Remote Opener to a 20 year old Genie garage door opener


My wife got a new 2015 Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited and the instructions to program the almost 20 year old Genie garage door openers with a homelink transmitter did not work until I ran into this on a Gencoupe.com forum and it worked perfectly the first time.


HOMELINK IN-CAR REMOTE PROGRAMMING INSTRUCTIONS

To program a built-in-car transmitter to a rolling code garage door opener (Genie rolling code is called Intellicode, Liftmaster/Sears is called Security plus), you should take the following steps.

1. Clear out anything previously programmed into the in-car system from the factory by holding down on the 2-outside buttons simultaneously, until the in-car LED starts flashing rapidly. This may take up to a minute (in most cases, the key should be on auxilary, and/or the car door must be shut).

2. Decide which button you want to make to be your in-car garage door transmitter. Hold your transmitter up near the selected button, pressing both the garage door remote and the selected in-car transmitter button simultaneously. Hold down on the buttons until the in-car, LED light flashes rapidly. This sets the in-car remote transmitter to be your garage door openers make transmitter, but you are not done. You now need to make this in-car transmitter your personal transmitter.

3. Go to the Learn Button on your garage door opener.
The button is usually next to the area where the floppy antenna is connected to the motor head. With Genie it is most often behind the light lens, and an indicator light flashes red when pressed. With Sears or Liftmaster (Chamberlain) it is near, or part of, the terminal screw board, and is a red, green or purple square button with a green, amber or purple indicator light. Press this learn button momentarily. The indicator light will turn on and blink if Genie or otherwise stay lit. For Genie systems, go back to the in-car transmitter button you programmed and press this button 3 or 4 times, or until the door starts moving. This should set your in-car transmitter to your garage door opener. For Liftmaster, Sears, or Linear Megacode press and hold the in-car button you programmed until the garage opener light flashes. Your in-car is now programmed to operate your door.

Astrix Networks Inc. reports record revenue for the six-month period ended March 31, 2015

Burlington, ON, Canada – May 14, 2015 – Astrix Networks Inc. (“Astrix”), operating as Memex Automation (“Memex”) (TSX-V: OEE), the global leader of manufacturing M2M productivity software, released its financial results and operational highlights for its second quarter ended March 31, 2015.

Astrix generated record revenue of $1.03 million for the six months ended March 31, 2015, compared to $576,000 for the six-month period ended March 31, 2014. This represents a 79% increase year over year.

Gross profit for the six-months ended March 31, 2015 totaled $651,000 compared to $368,000 for the six-months ended March 31, 2014. This represents an increase of $283,000 or 77% from the prior year period.

Net loss for the six-months ended March 31, 2015 was $973,000 as the company continued building out its sales force and latest product development. This compares to a loss of $651,000 for the six-months ended March 31, 2014.
Highlights from Q2 2015
  • Reported revenue of $490,000, a 21.5% year over year increase.
  • Orders (excluding component sales) received in the quarter totaled $486,000, an increase of 94% year over year.
  • 15 new customer wins, 4 through partner distribution channels, in the quarter vs. 5 customer wins in the same period last year.
  • First complete plant installation win in Mexico at Industrial B&S.
  • Received approval for up to $800,000 of interest free government financing through FedDev Ontario (Investing in Business Innovation Program) just after quarter end.  Proceeds will be used to fund and commercialize the Company’s latest version of MERLIN.
Company President, David McPhail, provided comment on Astrix continuing to build on its record revenue levels. “We are thrilled with the volume of orders that keep coming in, and the continuing customer adoption of our MERLIN shop floor communication platform strategy.  Orders received since quarter-end are also very encouraging.”

Huge Congratulation to Paul Warndorf - Winner of the Lawrence J. Rhoades Award by NCDMM

McLean, Virginia – AMT – The Association For Manufacturing Technology’s Paul Warndorf, vice president – strategic planning, has been selected for the prestigious Lawrence J. Rhoades Award, given by the National Center for Defense Manufacturing and Machining (NCDMM).
 
The award honors the memory of Rhoades, his entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to the advancement of manufacturing processes industry-wide. Rhoades was a former chairman of the board of directors for AMT, as well as one of the founders of NCDMM and an inaugural member of its board of directors.
 
“Paul is a globally recognized manufacturing expert and has toiled tirelessly on behalf of the manufacturing technology industry, in areas such as equipment and manufacturing standards, and export control reform”, said Ralph J. Resnick, president and executive director of NCDMM. “But probably the most significant of Paul’s contributions has been his vision for and leadership of the MTConnect standard. I think former MTConnect Institute Chairman Dave Edstrom said it best: ‘Paul Warndorf has been an MTConnect shepherd, conductor, and guiding light. There are thousands of ways MTConnect could’ve died, and thanks to Paul, it did not.’ Paul epitomizes the purpose and spirit intended for this award.”
 
“I think back to the many times I was with Larry Rhoades and what he represented to our industry. He was an innovator, a futurist – but most of all, he was one nice guy. He made you feel important whenever you were around him,” Warndorf said. “I’ve been very fortunate to have a lot of opportunities, and I’ve been able to take advantage of them mainly because of those I worked with and those who worked for me. Larry was good at that. He surrounded himself with the best people, but most importantly he gave them an opportunity to achieve and create things that had never been done before.”
 
“What I’d like to say to everybody is: Follow Larry’s example. Create opportunities for our future innovators and visionaries, and most of all, make everyone around you feel important,” Warndorf concluded.
 
Warndorf first joined AMT in 1996 and became vice president – manufacturing technology in 2003 to lead in the development of AMT’s Technology Roadmap for the Machine Tool Industry, benchmarking the future performance needs of equipment. He also led the startup of the Smart Machine Platform Initiative aimed at developing technologies to meet those needs. In 2007, he managed the creation of the MTConnect standard, which allows collection of shop floor data and communication between equipment and devices. He formed the MTConnect Institute for AMT to carry forward the further development of the standard and to meet ongoing data collection requirements. Warndorf currently serves as secretary of the MTConnect Institute.
 
Prior to joining AMT, Warndorf held leadership positions at General Research Corp. and the Institute of Advanced Manufacturing Sciences in Cincinnati, Ohio. He began his manufacturing career at the age of 18 as an electrical apprentice at Cincinnati Milacron. 
 
Warndorf graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a degree in electrical engineering, and also received an MBA from Xavier University.

McMaster University 3rd Annual Industry Open House


Last month I was at McMaster University's 3rd Annual Industry Open House and sat on a Manufacturing Panel.


"To facilitate a "A Made in Canada Solution" to address the challenges facing Canada's manufacturing sector, the Open House will be included in a full-day event, the inaugural McMaster Manufacturing Forum 2015: Manufacturing a Renaissance. Participants will have an opportunity to tour multiple research locations and listen to the views of experts in the manufacturing industry."

The Two Most Important Technologies For The Ubiquitous Use of Additive Manufacturing Technology


I am sitting on an Additive Manufacturing Panel, Additive Manufacturing + 3d Printing Conference & Expo, in Boston this summer and in preparation for the conference I was asked the following question:


What technologies are being developed that will allow for the ubiquitous use of additive manufacturing?

Below is my answer:



The two most important technologies for the ubiquitous use of additive manufacturing in today's machine tools by the addition of tool changeable laser cladding heads, as demonstrated by Hybrid Manufacturing Technologies, as well as MTConnect, which is the open and royalty-free manufacturing inter-connectivity standard. Hybrid's technology allows for the perfect marriage of subtractive AND additive technologies for existing machine tools. This new capability is a true game changer in manufacturing for a variety of reasons. First, the ability to take an existing subtractive machine tool and give it an additive tool opens up the ability to create parts that would have been impossible to create on a subtractive only machine tool or an additive only device. The world of refurbing parts could be the best example.  Instead of throwing away the $25,000 damaged ship propeller, the damage parts are ground down, new material is added where needed and finally the surface is finished without ever leaving the hybrid machine tool. MTConnect enabled additive equipment will allow manufacturers to easily monitor their additive systems.
MTConnect can be thought of as the "bluetooth for manufacturing" that connects manufacturing devices to applications such as shop monitoring dashboards which can easily show areas where productivity can be improved.

This Might Change The Discussion On Climate Change



The Washington Post has a great article by Chris Mooney. It is titled:

Pope Francis has given the climate 

movement just what it needed —

Mooney starts off with:

"This week — and it still feels strange to write this — the major climate change news story came out of the Vatican.

There, at the center of global Catholicism, church leaders joined with politicians, scientists and economists to draft a statement declaring not only that climate change is a “scientific reality” but also that there’s a moral and religious responsibility to do something about it. And an even more powerful statement is expected soon from Pope Francis himself, who is slated to release a major papal encyclical on the environment this summer."

This new Pope is a breath of fresh air on many fronts. For example, as reported by The New York Times in July of 2013:

“If someone is gay and he searches for the Lord and has good will, who am I to judge?” Francis told reporters, speaking in Italian but using the English word “gay.”



Francis’s words could not have been more different from those of Benedict XVI, who in 2005 wrote that homosexuality was “a strong tendency ordered toward an intrinsic moral evil,” and an “objective disorder.” The church document said men with “deep-seated homosexual tendencies” should not become priests."

Thanks Gaurav Chaudhari - Memex Automation Software Developer Intern

On Tuesday April 21, 2015, we were able to thank and recognize our software developer co-op student at Memex Automation, Gaurav Chaudhari, from the University of Waterloo.

Gaurav is very bright and a gifted software developer who worked for us this past winter in a full time co-op position as a software developer.  In the months that Gaurav was with the Memex Software Development Team, he managed to work on a number of important projects for us.  Gaurav helped create and develop software for our future MERLIN 3.0 Manufacturing Execution System (MES) platform in a number of areas, including the auto report scheduler, dashboard utilities, visual job queue, slide show and job editor.

We want to thank Gaurav for his outstanding work and we wish him all the best!

Happy 50th Anniversary of Moore's Law



The Washington Post's Robert J. Samuelson writes a very nice article titled, "

The power of Moore’s Law

The article opens with:

"Fifty years ago, in mid-April 1965, the trade magazine Electronics published an article by an obscure scientist making a seemingly preposterous prediction: The number of electronic components (transistors, resistors, capacitors) that could be squeezed onto integrated circuits — what we now call computer chips — would double every year for a decade. The author was Gordon Moore, and his forecast, subsequently slightly modified, is now known as Moore’s Law. We have been living with the consequences ever since."

Having spent 37 years in the computer industry, I can tell you that Moore's Law is the first law of computing.

Mr. Samuelson makes the following great points:


"The resulting explosion in computing power is almost unfathomable. A single chip today can contain 10 billion transistors. In 2014, global chip production was equal to 8 trillion transistors being produced every second, according to Dan Hutcheson of VLSI Research. Prices have collapsed. A single transistor is now worth a billionth of a penny. Even Moore has been surprised at the durability of Moore’s Law. Engineers and scientists have repeatedly defied formidable technical obstacles to expand chip capacity."

My (no money) Weight Bet With My Three Sons


I told my three sons that for my oldest sons wedding on Sunday May 24th, that I would be at 19x in terms of my weight.  All three made statements such as, "the only way that happens if is you have a leg removed."  True, that would be possibly easier route, but after reading about Penn Jillette and his weight loss - 100 pounds in 100 days, I think there is time:

  • The total number of days between Monday, April 20th, 2015 and Sunday, May 24th, 2015 is 34 days.
  • This is equal to 1 month and 4 days.
  • This does not include the end date, so it's accurate if you're measuring your age in days, or the total days between the start and end date. But if you want the duration of an event that includes both the starting date and the ending date, then it would actually be 35 days.

EIght Year Anniversary of the Tragedy at Virginia Tech

Today is the eight year anniversary of the tragedy at Virginia Tech.

My thoughts and prayers go out to all the families, relatives and friends of those who lost their lives on April 16th, 2007 in this senseless tragedy.....

There is a permanent memorial at VT. The Collegiate Times has a nice article describing the memorial.
My memories of last April 16th started with a phone call from my wife. Julie called and said, "just wanted to let you know that John is fine." At the time I was on my SunRay reading email while on a con call when she called my cellphone. She never calls me during theday since she is a school teacher. "Why would John not be be fine?" I asked. She asked me if I was watching TV or listening to the news. Of course I was not watching TV or listening to the news. She explained what was going on. I immediately interrupted the Sun folks on the con call and quickly said, "I had to get off the call, there was a shooting at my son's school."
It was then that I turned on the TV and was shocked to see the peaceful and beautiful VT campus on the news. I started getting emails, phone calls from literally around the world checking on John. You sometimes forget in casual conversation that you mentioned something about your kids that your friends and colleagues remember. Every time a call came, I paused the DVR. I was getting the current updates from friend, colleagues\s and family all around the world via email and non stop phone calls. As the numbers kept rising, it became more and more surreal.
 My son John was working for the Collegiate Times during his freshman year.  He put together a very nice week long history of events starting on April 16th through April 23rd that shows what happened each day.
I can not imagine the horror the students and faculty must have felt. There was an article in the post today by Nick Miroff, titled, "A Year Later, Virginia Tech Is Still Healing" is a well written article worth reading. As Miroff points out:
"Virginia Tech students have learned to talk about it in shorthand, if they talk about it at all. This Story
They do not use the words massacre, or
shootings, or rampage. They call it "April
 16th," and sometimes not even that. To
 say "four-sixteen" is enough. Everyone
 knows." 
I have been back to VT many times since April 16th, 2007 both as a parent and working for Sun Microsystems where I have given talks and brought down Sun's thought leaders to speak at VT's ACM where my son John is President.  Each time, the first thing I do is visit the memorial
          Governor Kaine has did a good job demanding there was the VT Task Force.  Governor Kaine stated:
"On April 16, 2007, Virginia Tech University suffered a terrible tragedy. Today, my thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families and the entire Virginia Tech community.
"In the year that has passed since that horrible day, we have grieved for those we lost and prayed for the comfort of their loved ones. We have rejoiced in the recovery of those who were injured. We have been inspired by the unfaltering hope and Hokie spirit of Virginia Tech. And we have renewed our commitment to do even more to learn lessons from that day and to make our campuses and communities safer.
"As I think about the victims' families, I am at a loss for words to express what is in my heart. The courage and strength they have shown in the face of such tremendous, tragic loss is awe-inspiring. We have been inspired by the resilient Hokie spirit of Virginia Tech, both in Blacksburg and around the world. Since that tragic day last April, the unshakeable sense of unity and hope demonstrated by the Hokies has touched the lives of people around the world. Their focus on pulling together to support their school and each other in the days after the shooting, and their commitment to public service through the VT Engage program in the months that followed has moved us all.
"We still have work to do. A continued commitment to improvement is the best tribute we can pay to those who lost so much. And as we move forward, we will continue to be inspired by those in the Hokie Nation."


VT seems to have made the right changes. The VT Task Force seemed to not pull any punches when it came to how the University should have dealt with the events on the morning of April 16th, 2007. As the AP reported and I FULLY AGREE with Governor Kaine about purchasing firearms at gun shows. Virginia needs to get its act together.  This loophole is INSANE!

"Gov. Timothy M. Kaine proposed mandated background checks yesterday for everyone who attempts to purchase firearms at gun shows - legislation that he called critical to helping prevent future tragedies like the shootings at Virginia Tech. Many families of those killed or injured in the April shootings have called on legislators to close Virginia’s so-called gun show loophole, which allows people to purchase firearms from unlicensed sellers at gun shows without having to submit to background checks. Under current Virginia law, only licensed dealers are required to run background checks on customers.
“If by doing this, we can keep one family from having to go through what these families have suffered, it will be the best thing that the legislature will do this year,” Kaine said at Virginia State Police headquarters, surrounded by several of the victims’ families."

VA continues to be a backward state and allows the gun show loophole.   I also called into the Kojo Nnamdi Show when he had an anniversary show on the VT shooting.   If you go to the 11:52 mark, you can hear my statements and question that goes until the 13:14 mark.

The tragedy at Virginia Tech is still heart wrenching. As a parent of a VT freshman, it is still hard to comprehend the magnitude of this tragedy. There
were many heroes on VT's Campus on April 16th, 2007.
Many
are well documented in the press.

There are five individuals who were behind the scenes
that are absolute heroes in my mind
. Those five heroes are
the individuals who run online Collegiate Times which is
VT's main online paper and kept the world informed on the
latest breaking news coming out of VT on this senseless
tragedy. These five individuals were literally working
around the clock, giving up sleep to keep their fellow
students, parents, family, friends, faculty and the rest of
the world informed.


These five unsung heroes
all have the "first of human
qualities" - courage. It would have been perfectly
understandable if these five individuals would have given
up when their servers went down. But they did not. They
had the courage to literally work around the clock to get
the server back up *and* keep the rest of the world
informed of the latest updates to one of the most of
horrific days in the history of our country.

individuals are:

Online editor Chris Ritter's main goal was to get
the site back to its original state -- a large,

couldn't happen, Ritter and his staff opted for a
simple text page with blue background -- to ensure
they could communicate information quickly to

. After that page continued to overload its
own server, The Collegiate Times tech adviser,
Scott Chandler, suggested that the staff use the

hosts the publication's site.

Once the site stabilized on the additional server,
The Collegiate Times began posting photos and
videos to a third server usually reserved for
design research and development. To prevent
crashing again, a Virginia Tech server is now
hosting videos and photos for the site.


Monday night The Collegiate Times staff redesigned
its homepage from scratch to have a Web site
that
was "intuitive and a graphically pleasing display"
of its special content for the shootings. The
Collegiate Times began creating breaking-news
multimedia when escaped convict William Morva shot
two police officers at Virginia Tech on the first
day of school last August.

Since then, Ritter said users are looking at the
Web for information more than ever before, and the
staff has adopted a Web-first attitude change."

Mark Albert's Great Article - Making Sure MTConnect Is A Good Fit



Mark Albert, Editor in Chief of Modern Machine Shop, writes a great article on MTConnect and Memex Automation.  Mark is a great writer and a real expert in MTConnect and of course manufacturing.

The title of the article is:  "Making Sure MTConnect Is A Good Fit"

Below is a snippet:

"The story starts with the shop’s overriding goal to boost its overall equipment effectiveness (OEE). OEE is a measure of how well a manufacturing operation is doing. The most common way to calculate OEE is to multiply machine availability, performance and quality, where each of these three factors represents a percentage of an ideal total or optimal level. For now, the company can calculate only availability. But this is a great start, because not long ago, its management was most concerned about its perception that the shop’s utilization rate was below what it could and should be.

Today, with an MTConnect-enabled machine monitoring system from Memex Automation (Burlington, Ontario) in place since September 2014, the shop is hitting 65 percent or higher utilization, which is up from 53 percent when the system was first installed. A plan is in place to improve utilization to 70 percent. The ultimate target is reaching the 85 percent utilization that is widely regarded as the level characteristic of world-class manufacturing organizations."

Mark continues later in the article sharing very valuable tips:

"These tips emerged from the shop’s experiences during this phase of implementation:
• Have stand-up meetings with each group of operators to answer questions about the system and explain the meaning and value of OEE.
• Share a vision of future system features that enable operators to report and track their contributions to productivity (setup activities, maintenance chores, feature checking, tool replenishment and so on).
• Set a reasonable baseline for machine availability. Initially, this was pegged at 57 percent, based on the initial monitoring period. Supervisors are pleased when a machine is operating above this level and concerned when it is below. As answers and suggestions flow from the good questions now being asked during this initial period, encourage positive actions to apply the improvements.
• Use data for positive, appreciative questioning. “I’ve noticed one of your machines has been down all morning. How can I help?” for example.
• Send help fast. When a machine is down, the best response is to have the production supervisor check it out in person. In most cases, these visits become impromptu training sessions about best shopfloor practices. This approach is especially valuable because it enables less-experienced operators to help themselves if the problem recurs.
• Look for patterns. This shop has MERLIN programmed to email a daily report to the production manager that summarizes machine time for all monitored machines. One of the patterns that became apparent from reviewing these reports is the high number of optional program stops that were occurring. Optional stops give operators a chance to clear chips, check dimensions, inspect inserts between cycles and so on. However, the number seemed excessive. The new thinking is that reducing the number of optional stops and using only the unavoidable ones more efficiently will significantly increase machine availability."
