The Movie Particle Fever

I watched the move "Particle Fever" on Netflix and thought it was excellent. The reviews have been outstanding. You do not have to have a Ph.D. in physics to absolutely become enthralled in the entire story of the Large Hadron Collider and Higgs boson particle as told through the eyes of a young physicist who realized how important these topics were and felt it should be captured on film.

As the movie's description states:

"As the Large Hadron Collider is about to be launched for the first time, physicists are on the cusp of the greatest scientific discovery of all time -- or perhaps their greatest failure."

Below is a nice summary from wikipedia:

"Particle Fever is a 2013 American documentary film tracking the first round of experiments at the Large Hadron Collider near Geneva, Switzerland. The film follows the experimental physicists at CERN who run the experiments, as well as the theoretical physicists who attempt to provide a conceptual framework for the LHC's results. The film begins in 2008 with the first firing of the LHC and concludes in 2012 with the successful identification of the Higgs boson.

The Communication Awards of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine awarded a $20,000 prize for excellence in communicating science to the general public in Film/Radio/TV to David Kaplan and Mark Levinson for "Particle Fever" on October 14, 2015. Trump and Pence on 60 Minutes Was Dumb and Dumber

I watch 60 Minutes tonight and I swear to god that I was watching Dumb and Dumber!  If ANYONE watched these two knuckleheads and think they should be the next President and Vice President then they either have rocks in their head, or they believe in the "Let Rome Burn" type of logic for the United States.

Machine Learning In Manufacturing

Machine learning is and will become very significant not only in everyday life, but specifically in manufacturing. In 2017, we will see machine learning in manufacturing in a very significant way.

Here is a very interesting article by Vivek Wadhwa in The Washington Post titled:

The amazing artificial intelligence we were promised is coming, finally

"The AI of the past used brute-force computing to analyze data and present them in a way that seemed human.  The programmer supplied the intelligence in the form of decision trees and algorithms.  Imagine that you were trying to build a machine that could play tic-tac-toe. You would give it specific rules on what move to make, and it would follow them. That is essentially how IBM’s Big Blue computer beat chess Grandmaster Garry Kasparov in 1997, by using a supercomputer to calculate every possible move faster than he could.

Today’s AI uses machine learning in which you give it examples of previous games and let it learn from those examples. The computer is taught what to learn and how to learn and makes its own decisions.  What’s more, the new AIs are modeling the human mind itself using techniques similar to our learning processes.  Before, it could take millions of lines of computer code to perform tasks such as handwriting recognition. Now it can be done in hundreds of lines. What is required is a large number of examples so that the computer can teach itself."

I really like the point that Kevin Kelly brings out in the article:  

"AI has applications in every area in which data are processed and decisions required. Wired founding editor Kevin Kelly likened AI to electricity: a cheap, reliable, industrial-grade digital smartness running behind everything.  He said that it “will enliven inert objects, much as electricity did more than a century ago. Everything that we formerly electrified we will now ‘cognitize.’ This new utilitarian AI will also augment us individually as people (deepening our memory, speeding our recognition) and collectively as a species. There is almost nothing we can think of that cannot be made new, different, or interesting by infusing it with some extra IQ.  In fact, the business plans of the next 10,000 start-ups are easy to forecast: Take X and add AI. This is a big deal, and now it’s here.”

This is an excellent (and long) article on what Oracle is doing (or not doing) with Java.  The article by Sean Gallagher is titled:

As an old SUNWer, this causes me to either shake my head in disgust or to speak in expletives.

The article in arstechnica starts off:

"Stop me if you've heard this one before: Oracle has quietly pulled funding and development efforts away from a community-driven technology where customers and partners have invested time and code. It all seems to be happening for no reason other than the tech isn't currently printing money.

It's a familiar pattern for open source projects that have become the property of Oracle. It started with OpenSolaris and continued with OpenOffice.org. And this time, it's happening to Java—more specifically to Java Enterprise Edition (Java EE), the server-side Java technology that is part of hundreds of thousands of Internet and business applications. Java EE even plays an integral role for many apps that aren't otherwise based on Java."

"A federal appeals court has voted to uphold a series of strict new rules for Internet providers, handing a major victory to regulators in the fight over net neutrality and ensuring that one of the most sweeping changes to hit the industry in recent years will likely remain on the books.

The 2-1 court ruling Tuesday forces Internet providers such as Verizon and Comcast to obey federal regulations that ban the blocking or slowing of Internet traffic to consumers. The regulations from the Federal Communications Commission also forbid carriers from selectively speeding up websites that agree to pay the providers a fee — a tactic critics have said could unfairly tilt the commercial playing field against startups and innovators who may not be able to afford it."

Does The Economy Do Better Under Democrats Or Republicans?

The title of this blog is an often conversation (with contention) with my Democrat and Republican friends.  I thought this article by
 Rep. Carolyn Maloney U.S. Representative for New York’s 12th District; Ranking Democrat, Joint Economic Committee was extremely interesting read.  Below are a few snippets that jumped out at me:

"Research from Princeton University economists Alan Blinder and Mark Watson finds that, since World War II, the economy has performed substantially better by virtually every measure when Democrats have been in the White House. GDP growth, job creation and industrial production have all been stronger during Democratic administrations than during Republican ones.

As the Ranking Member of the Joint Economic Committee, I asked my staff to review the Blinder and Watson findings. They were able to update and build on the economists’ analysis and found that on average since World War II, real (inflation-adjusted) GDP has grown about 1.6 times faster and private-sector jobs have grown nearly 2.5 times faster under Democrats than Republicans.

The starting point does not matter: GDP and jobs have grown faster under Democrats regardless of whether the analysis begins with President Truman, President Kennedy or President Reagan.

Conservatives often point to Ronald Reagan as the model for strong economic leadership, invoking his time in office as the Golden Age. But, in fact, job creation and GDP growth during the Reagan administration fell short of the post-World War II average for Democratic presidents."

National Drive Your Corvette To Work Day

This Friday July 1st is National Drive Your Corvette To Work Day because it is the closest day to June 30.

Why June 30th?  That is the day in 1953 that the first Corvette rolled off the assembly line.

The city of Cleveland deserved a championship and the finally got it.

LeBron is "King James" for his AMAZING final game and amazing series.  The Cav's Kyrie Irving proved to be the perfect partner for LeBron and had one of the clutch shots of all time at the end of last night's game. 

Coming back from a 3-1 deficit was an NBA first.

Last nights 93-89 win was one of the best game 7's of all time.

Romney and Warren Are Right On Trump - Where Is Paul Ryan's Moral Compass?

How many times do Mitt Romney and Elizabeth Warren agree?  

On Donald Trump, they are both correct.

As reported on ABC News:  "Speaking to a crowd of roughly 300 political and business leaders at his annual summit in Park City, Romney said he worried about the example a Trump presidency might set for future generations, that it would lead to "trickle-down racism."

As reported by the Boston Globe:

"Warren addressed the American Constitution Society’s national convention in Washington. She relentlessly attacked Trump, especially for his recent description of a federal judge as biased against him because the US District Court Judge Gonzalo Curiel is of Mexican heritage.

“Judge Curiel is one of countless American patriots who has spent decades quietly serving his country, sometimes at great risk to his own life,’’ Warren said. “Donald Trump is a loud, nasty, thin-skinned fraud who has never risked anything for anyone and serves nobody but himself.’’  Warren said at the American Constitution Society of Law and Policy National Convention in Washington just before endorsing former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for president."

"House Speaker Paul Ryan ripped Donald Trump's recent remarks saying a judge presiding over a lawsuit involving his business was biased because of his Mexican heritage as "the textbook definition of a racist comment.""

The article continues:

"I disavow those comments," Ryan said. Pressed on whether he regretted his own endorsement of Trump that came last week, Ryan added, "I regret those comments he made."

Let's be clear, IF you support a racist, THEN YOU ARE A RACIST AS WELL.  There is no "well, I like the other ideas that Trump has" and you get a pass on being a racist BS.   You're a racist, just admit if you are voting for Trump.  You CAN'T have it BOTH ways. Period. Hard stop.

The problem is that Hillary is certainly no saint and I blogged on March 4th, 2015 that this personal email server issue should disqualify her for any future offices.

Unfortunately, the only rationale answer in 2016 is to hold your nose and vote for Hillary. 

Why Has Siri Gotten So BAD?

My bride sent this article to me at USA Today to me because I have been complaining how absolutely bad Siri has gotten - not staying the same - not getting better - BUT WORSE!

In Jefferson Graham's article he quotes James Niehouse, the director of photography for A Beautiful Planet, the first IMAX film to be shot digitally :

“I’ll get an occasional answer or two that I want, but most of the time it’s things I have to read,” he says. “I don’t want to read a website while I’m driving.”

I agree!  Way too often, I get a website!  I don't want a written answer to a verbal question!


Mr. Graham also quotes Mike Reiss, a writer for The Simpsons.

I agree.  Apple needs to fix this NOW.  Steve Jobs would have never stood for such incompetence....

Passing of "The Greatest"

If you were born in the 50's and loved sports, there was no one, and I mean NO ONE, that was bigger the Muhammad Ali.

Everything that should be said, is being said today. 

One of my favorite memories of Muhammad Ali is sitting in a living room in Trenton, Illinois in the 1960s listening to an AM radio with my father to his fights. 

There have been and never will be a better interview than when Howard Cossell would sit down with Mohammad Ali.  You could feel the love and the tension on who would get the better of the conversation.

Below is from Jon Saraceno of USA Today Sports - who I know because our sons played baseball together for a number of years in Ashburn, wrote an article titled:

Jon writes:

Cosell: “Are you taking Zora Folley too lightly?”

Ali: “Why would you say that?”

Cosell: “Because every indication has been that you’re confident that you can beat Zora.”

Muhammad Ali was physically and mentally quicker than any other person on planet earth.  

I often wonder how things might be different if Muhammad Ali had not lost his ability to speak and think from Parkinsons disease.  Would we be having a vary different conversation on religion?

Are there ANY athletes that would have given up YEARS of their revenue at the PEAK of their physical abilities for what they believe in?  I cannot name a single one. 

For those of us who worshipped Mohammed Ali as a kid, today is a mixed day.  It is very sad to watch his passing, but when you watch these black and white highlight films of him at his absolute peak, how can it NOT put a smile on your face?

Oracle vs. Google Java API Lawsuit

I am very glad to see that common sense won out here....

In arstechnica there is a great article by Joe Mullin titled:

Second Oracle v. Google trial could lead to huge headaches for developers

on the importance of this ruling for software developers.  As Mr. Mullin states:

"But what's truly at stake in Oracle v. Google, round two? For those who work with code for a living, a lot. The case revolves around how Application Programming Interfaces, or APIs, can and cannot be used. Boiled down, APIs define how different types of code communicate to each other. If owners of those APIs can use copyright law to control how programming is done, there will be a sea change in industry practices. For many developers, especially of open source software, this will be a change for the worse.

"That is really going to create a radical shift in how software is developed worldwide," Mitch Stoltz, an attorney for the Electronic Frontier Foundation who's been following the case, said in an interview. "If it requires permission each time APIs are used and code calls other code, then you've upended the economics of software."

This would have killed the golden goose of software development if Oracle would have prevailed here.
